Book Review: Making Love Potions

Prolific author and Licensed Holistic Esthetician Stephanie L. Tourles (Raw Energy in a Glass, Hands-on Healing Remedies) latest book, Making Love Potions: 64 All Natural Recipes for Irresistible Herbal Aphrodisiacs is the perfect little book to get you through the winter doldrums and into the kitchen to whip up some unique organic and healthy creations.

Tourles 25 years of experience in teaching and practicing healthy living translates into over 60 potions that even beginners will have no trouble tackling.

The potions appear in seven different chapters and range from drinks—alcoholic and non; perfumes, bath salts, massage oils, edible body butters and lubricants, herbal tonics and decadent sweets.

Outside of some of the less common herbal ingredients—which most people should still be able to find at a local health store or co-op—the potions include easily found items like coconut oil, raw honey, vitamin E oil, beeswax and common household spices like cinnamon and vanilla.

Some potion highlights include:

  • “Pucker Up” Sparkling Cranberry Lemonade;
  • Cherry Kissing Cordial;
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice Body Powder;
  • Classic English Lavender Perfume Oil;
  • Cinnamon, Ginger & Orange Stimulating Bath Salts;
  • Edible “Sweet Pleasure” Body Honey;
  • and Mexican Dark Chocolate Blueberry Fudge

Each chapter of Making Love Potions is relatively short, usually under 10 recipes or potions, but have enough variety that readers should be able to find something they like.

The last chapter, titled Aphrodite’s Apothecary, includes a comprehensive list of the items required to make the various potions in the book as well as a listing of suppliers–in case you have trouble finding the ingredients locally. This section also includes basic info on base and essential oils, thickeners and hydrosols, which will be helpful for the those new to creating their own herbal potions.

The sensually colored illustrations by Madalina Andronic—in purple, red and pink tones—complement the book’s subject perfectly and are inclusive by showing all different types of couples.

An good read for interested in finding some new and unique recipes that are healthy as well.
